How do we deal with discouragement?
1. Fervently turn to God in prayer
1. Fervently turn to God in prayer
Moses questions…
God’s goodness –
“Why have you caused all this trouble for this people?”
God’s purpose –
“Why did you ever send me?”
God’s actions –
“You haven’t rescued your people at all…”

God’s purpose –
“Why did you ever send me?”
God’s actions –
“You haven’t rescued your people at all…”
2. Face discouragement with God's promises

Dig Deeper:
1. Recap Exodus 1-4. If you could summarize these chapters into one or two words, what would they be? What has God’s Word taught us up to this point?
2. What does discouragement look like? What does discouragement feel like?
3. Read Exodus 5:1-5. What possible emotions could Moses and Aaron have experienced standing in front of a ruler (Pharaoh) that the Egyptian people considered to be a god?
4. How did Pharaoh respond? How quickly did he react?
5. Read Exodus 5:6-9. What advantage do you think Pharaoh hopes to gain by having them gather straw?
6. Read Exodus 5:10-17. What nationality are the foreman? Why would Pharaoh place Israelites in a position of authority over other Israelites?
7. Who was the first person the foremen sought for help when their brick quota could not be met? What could they have done instead?
8. Read Exodus 5:19-23. What is Moses’s response the foremen? Where does he direct his frustrations?
9. What are the possible heart motivations Moses had when he approached God? What does Moses question through his words?
10. When you are in a difficult situation, even one you know God has placed you in, who do you turn to? Why?
11. Do you talk to God about everything? If not, why?
12. Read Exodus 6:1-5. What does God’s response reveal about His character? What does He remind Moses of?
13. Read Exodus 6:6-8. What are God’s promises? Discuss the promises of rescue, redemption, adoption, and inheritance found in this passage.
14. Read Exodus 6:9. What are the reasons that the Israelites did not listen to Moses’s message given from God?
15. What encouragement do you find in seeing that the Israelite’s lack of faith did not deter God from faithfully fulfilling His promises?
16. Like Moses, leaders will experience opposition and misunderstanding by the people they are trying to lead. What promises of God can leaders cling to today when encountering difficulty in leadership?
17. How can we be encouraged today knowing that God uses imperfect people?
Live It Out:
Moses was a part of God’s bigger story. We are given this life to make much of Jesus. When facing discouragement, always cling to God through His prayer and promises. Look up scripture that shares God’s promises with us. Write out all of the different promises that He gives us. Write or speak that over anything that might be a source of discouragement for you right now. Then, pray to God, thanking Him for all His promises. Look for opportunities to share about Jesus through any season, including those of discouragement.
