Dig Deeper:
1. When you hear the word exodus, what comes to mind? What about the book of Exodus in the Bible?
2. What does the word exodus mean?
3. How would you describe the word faithfulness?
4. Read Exodus 1:6-7. What is happening to the Israelites at this time? To whom had God promised this would happen? How do you think the Egyptians feel about this?
5. Read Exodus 1:8. How do you think the memory of Joseph was forgotten? What could have been done to prevent that from happening? In what sense did the new king not “know” Joseph?
6. Why is remembrance so important in our daily lives?
7. Read Exodus 1:9-10-11. What is Pharaoh’s greatest fear? How does that shape his decision?
8. Read Exodus 1:12. God fulfilled His promise of fruitfulness even under Egyptian oppression. What does this say about Him?
9. Read Exodus 1:13-14. What strategies did Pharaoh decree in his attempt to control the growth of the Hebrew population? Despite God fulfilling His promise of fruitfulness, the Israelites also suffered greatly during this time. How can we, like the Israelites, grow deeper in our understanding that nothing can remove God’s promises, even in the midst of pain?
10. Read Exodus 1:15-17. What were the results of the king’s request? Discuss the multitude of ways that Shiphrah and Puah demonstrated courageous faith.
11. Holy fear is a reverential awe of God. Discuss what this means, and how it is different than being scared of God.
12. Read Exodus 1:18-22. How does Pharaoh increase in his evilness? How do you think the Egyptians reacted to his command?
13. What social pressures are on people today that are similar to the pressure the midwives, and all the Egyptians, felt? How can having a holy fear of God help us resist those pressures?
14. Read Exodus 2:1-4. What must it been like to try to hide a newborn for three months? Describe how it was evident that God’s hand was upon Moses to protect him and deliver His people through him.
15. Read Exodus 2:5-7. What role does Pharaoh’s daughter play in God’s plan? What role does Moses’ sister, Miriam, play?
16. How are their small acts of obedience representing a bold faithfulness? How can we display bold faithfulness through small acts of obedience?
17. How does this story help us see how God is working in the midst of the mess today?
18. Read Hebrews 3:5-6. How does Moses’ story ultimately point to Jesus? What parallels do you see between Moses and Jesus?
Live It Out:
Are you experiencing freedom in Jesus? While not enslaved like the Israelites were to the Egyptians, slavery and bondage is found in serving anything other than God. Is there anything in your life that has enslaved you? Throughout this summer, pray to God, asking Him to work in your heart and change you from the inside out. Discover what might be keeping you in bondage. Find freedom through your relationship with Jesus.
