The Great Tribulation

The Great Tribulation

Daniel chapter 9 contains one of the most remarkable prophecies in the Bible. In it, God downloads to Daniel the things to come before the greatest day in history; the return of Christ! First is The Tribulation. That future 7-year period when the world is shaken to its core. Knowing these things in advance gives us hope, sharpens our faith and encourages us to warn others. Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place."

“Oh, that we might learn how to pray so that God should be the subject as well as the object of our supplications! O God, thy Church needs thee above everything else! A poor, little, sick, neglected child needs fifty things; but you can put all those needs into one if you say that the child needs its mother. So, the Church, of God needs a thousand things, but you can put them all into one if you say, ‘The Church of God needs her God.’ ” (Spurgeon)
God's Time is always Right!

“One of Satan’s most subtle delusions is that he succeeds in getting hundreds of thousands of men to trust in prayer, apart from faith in the shed blood of Jesus.” (Talbot)
The Tribulation:
The 7-year period when God will finish His work in Israel and finalize His judgement of the unbelieving world. The church, consisting of all those who have faith and are In Christ Jesus, will not be preset during the tribulation.

The Prophecy of the 70 Weeks:
1. The word weeks, means “sevens”, or units of 7’s.
a. Depending on the context it can mean: days, weeks, months or years
b. Here it means a 7-yr period.
c. Daniel’s prayer concerns Israel’s 70-year captivity
d. 70 periods of 7 years
e. 70 times 7 = 490 years

God’s prophetic agenda for His people and the city of Jerusalem will be 490 years
"Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision."

a. Vitally important!
b. Jesus himself references this passage of Daniel!

Matthew 24: 15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

i. This is how they would know that the time of the end had arrived.

ii. Both The angel Gabriel and the Lord Jesus Christ tell their readers to “understand”.
Daniel’s prayer concerns Israel’s 70-year captivity

a. 70 periods of 7 years
b. 70 times 7 = 490 years

i. God’s prophetic agenda for His people and the city of Jerusalem will be 490 years
ii. His people will be in the City
iii. There is a timeline.
1st period/49 years, until the city and its walls are rebuilt

1. The decree is that of Artaxerxes in March 14, 445BC authorizing Nehemiah to go to Jerusalem to rebuild and restore the city
2nd period/+434=483 years, from the decree till the Messiah appears

1. That brings us to April, 32 A.D.

a. If we work this out, as chronologers have done, we find that the 483 years (7 years short of the full 490), was fulfilled...

On the very day the Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, with the multitude of disciples bearing palm branches in their hands going before him crying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!"
He came to offer himself as king to the nation that had learned of his coming for many centuries from the prophets, but instead of a crown He received a wreath of thorns; instead of a throne, His body hung on a bloody cross.

But--in that crucifixion the redemption of Israel and of the whole world was accomplished!

John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Conclusion:

1. Gabriel’s message assured Daniel that Jerusalem and the temple would be rebuilt.
a. A contemporary and future fulfillment

2. This prophecy tells us that the Messiah had to come before AD70, when the temple was destroyed by Titus.

3. He didn’t tell Gabriel what would happen between the 69th and 70th week.
a. The Church age, the body of Christ
b. A mystery hidden in O.T. times and not revealed till the times of Christ
c. He didn’t know of the glorious church that would bring together Jew and Gentile

Some of the prophecy has been fulfilled, the rest will be fulfilled in the end-times.
