Essence: A Study on the Nature of God - God in Three Persons (week 3)

Essence: A Study on the Nature of God - God in Three Persons (week 3)

One of the more difficult concepts for many believers to grasp is the doctrine of the Trinity. The Christian Church worships one God, but says this God is three in One. While many have an awareness of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit very few would feel confident explaining the Trinity, let alone why it is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. Understanding the biblical narrative behind our belief in a triune God helps give revelation to the importance of knowing God as Father, Son, and Spirit.

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
A.W. Tozer
Trinity -
Tri-Unity, or Three-in-Oneness

The Trinity is a divine mystery,
not a numerical puzzle.
1. God is three persons.
2. Each person is fully God.
3. There is one God.
What is the biblical basis for the doctrine of the Trinity?
Looking at the totality of Scripture, it clearly shows us a threeness of God and a oneness of God, so we have to accept both. There’s a threeness in person and a oneness in being.

God is not more three than He is one, nor is He more one than He is three.
1. God is three persons.
2. Each person is fully God.
3. There is one God.
Connect the Trinity to the Gospel:

The Father sent the Son and sent the Spirit.
This affects how we approach God:
1. in corporate worship

We come to the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This affects how we approach God:
2. in the way we pray

We pray to the Father through the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.
There is a distinction in how each member of the Trinity relates to the world.
Father -
creates His sovereign plan; commands, directs, and sends the Son and Spirit based on His plans
Son -
obeys the will of the Father, communicates the plans of the Father to humanity, shows humanity what God is like
Holy Spirit -
the gift of salvation; gives us regeneration, the new spiritual life found in Christ; empowers us for service; completes to the work planned by the Father and begun by the Son
How does living with a proper knowledge of the Trinity affect us?
It affects:
1. Our Heads
- the way we think is transformed
2. Our Hearts
- our emotions are transformed
3. Our Hands
- our actions are transformed
