Jesus is always willing to walk into hopeless places.
Our area of greatest pain or shame is often the avenue to our greatest healing and freedom.
Jesus changes people, and changed people change people.

Dig Deeper:
1. What has been one of your favorite Jesus encounters so far with this sermon series? Why?
2. Are you already familiar with Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4? If so, what do you remember from this encounter previously?
3. Read John 4:1-3. Why did Jesus leave? Why would he leave because of this? How is this different from Jesus’s previous encounters with the Pharisees?
4. Read John 4:4. What do you know about Samaria? What does the phrase “had to travel” tell you? What does this share about who Jesus is?
5. What was the relationship between the Jewish people and the Samaritans?
6. Read John 4:5-9. Describe the scene. Who is there? What time of day is it? How is all of this significant?
7. Who initiates the conversation? How does the woman respond? What is she saying to him through her question to him? What does this tell us about Jesus’s intention?
8. What do we learn about Jesus in verse 6? How does this insight play a part in their interaction?
9. How does Jesus break barriers that might have otherwise been in the way? If you were to share the gospel with someone else, what takeaways could you use from this encounter?
10. Read John 4:10-14. How does Jesus answer her question? Did she understand? Was this intentional?
11. What does Jesus mean when He says, “living water”?
12. Read John 4:15-18. Is the woman responding differently now? Why or why not? What do you think she was thinking and feeling when she heard Jesus’s response about her marital status?
13. Read John 4:19-22. What is her response to Jesus now? What is she learning about Him that she didn’t understand before?
14. Does Jesus bring up her marital status again? Why? Do you think His lack of condemnation for her sin indicates He’s focused on a deeper need for her, or do you think He’s affirming her? How does her response help justify your answer?
15. While your situation may be different, can you relate to this woman through some pain, baggage, or regret you’ve had in your life? Why is the very thing we are trying to keep hidden and untouched the exact thing Jesus wants us to bring to him?
16. Share an example of a time when you’ve seen someone bring something to Jesus that was a source of shame to them and how he healed them in this process.
17. Read John 4:23-26. What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth? What does Jesus reveal to her? What emotions do you think she felt all at once in this moment?
18. Read John 4:27-30. What was the woman’s response to Jesus? How is this similar to other people we have learned about who have encountered Jesus? How does their response encourage us to do the same?
19. What are some things you learned about Jesus through this encounter? What are some things you learned about yourself?

Live It Out:

Jesus changes people, and changed people change people. Who in your life effectively shared with you about Jesus? Write down their name(s). Praise God for them. Remember what they specifically did to share Jesus with you. How did they act? What was their demeanor? How did they treat you?

Then, consider who you are sharing Jesus with. Do you tell others about Him? If not, consider why. What fears or obstacles are holding you back? What can you do to overcome these hurdles? What can you learn from the Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus that can help you boldly share what He has done for you?

Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal to you who you should share the gospel with this week. Then boldly go share what Jesus has done in your life!
