Essence: A Study on the Nature of God - God is Transcendent, yet Immanent (week 2)

Earthly paradoxes are Heavenly principles. This is especially true when we see that God is all at once both Transcendent and Immanent. When we focus too much on the nearness of God (Immanence) we can replace intimacy with familiarity. When we focus too much on the vastness of God, we find detachment in place of reverence. When we hold these truths in tension there is a deep sense of awe and wonder that is behind the heart of worship.

“We may not be able to know God completely, but we can know Him accurately.”
Wayne Grudem
"Feeling awe is key for healthy development for human beings. I don’t understand why but we’re rigged in a way where we are meant to feel awe in order to develop into what we are meant to be."
Jonathan Haidt
Awe -
the perception of vastness that requires accommodation
Transcendent -
existing apart from and not subject to the limitations of the natural universe

Immanent -
indwelling; nearness
“God is immanent within human experience as the transcendent mystery that cannot be comprehended, in spite of its absolute nearness.”
Olson and Grenz in 20th Century Theology
Earthly paradoxes are Heaven’s principles.
“The greatness of God arouses fear within us. But the goodness of God encourages us not to be afraid of Him. To fear and to not be afraid, that is the paradox of our faith.”
A.W. Tozer
1. He hung the stars in place,
yet He handcrafted you.
2. His existence transcends space and time,
yet His Spirit lives within you.
3. He is perfectly Holy and pure,
yet He took your sins upon Himself to restore your relationship with Him.
When intimacy becomes familiarity we often become demanding of God, holding it against Him when He doesn’t do all we think He should do for us. But when we come reverently before Him, He welcomes us into His presence and allows us to experience the fullness of joy that comes from intimacy with Him.
