The Model of Mary
5/12/2024

SCRIPTURE
…God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. You will conceive and give birth to a Son, and you are to call Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a Son.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in clothes and placed Him in a manger.

And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee.

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Selections from Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1-2

THE MENTIONS OF MARY
Mary is referenced in at least 9 books of the Bible (Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Galatians).
Monuments are set up for Mary inside the Church of the Annunciation.

THE SPECULATIONS OF MARY
There are several unbiblical speculations about Mary including her perpetual virginity, her mother’s Immaculate Conception, her assumption into heaven, her role as mediator, her title as “Queen of Heaven,” etc.

We cannot exclude the beauty of her life due to the excess of others.

THE MODEL OF MARY
1/ Mary was a godly woman.
Mary understood the value of godliness. (Luke 1:28; Matthew 1:25)
God gives favor on three levels: Common Grace, Christian Grace, and Captured Grace.

Mary had her identity rooted in her Lord. (Luke 1:38)
Mary was filled with faith and belief. (Luke 1:38)
Belief is not the denial of facts but seeing through the lens of faith.
Mary was willing to suffer for her Lord. (John 8:41)
Reputations and more will be at stake when following Christ.

“I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” Francis Cardinal George

Mary embraced spiritual disciplines. (Luke 1:46-56; Acts 1:14)
It is clear that she engaged worship, grasped Scripture, and gave herself to prayer.

Mary was obedient to do what she knew to do. (Luke 2:22-24)

2/ Mary was a godly wife.
Mary understood humility, honor, and headship. (Matthew 2:13-21)

3/ Mary was a godly friend.
Mary honored and celebrated other women in her life. (Luke 1:41; John 19:25)

Healthy friendships are essential (Elizabeth, sister, Mary Magdalene).
Mary had infectious faith. (Luke 1:41)

4/ Mary was a godly mother.
Mary was pre-destined to raise her children. (Isaiah 7:14)
“I may not be the smartest person or the most gifted person. But if God has called me to pastor this church, then no one can do it better!” John Kilpatrick

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
Mary did what was necessary to protect her children. (Matthew 2:14-15)
Parents must determine boundaries of protection, while avoiding unnecessary extremes.

Mary raised her children in the House of God. (Luke 2:41)
Mary cultivated an atmosphere for her children to grow. (Luke 2:40-52)
She ensured intellectual, physical, spiritual, and friendship growth.
Mary believed in her children’s true potential. (John 2:3-5)
Mary was supportive even when she didn’t understand her children. (Matthew 12:47)
Mary understood the pain of raising children. (Luke 2:35; John 19:25-27)
“And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Luke 2:35
Hell can’t compete with the prayers of a mother consumed with desperation!
