For Further Thought and Discussion

Getting Started
1. What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?

Going Deeper
2. What does Jesus instruct Simon to do (v. 4)? Why would Simon have been hesitant to follow Jesus’ command (v. 5a)? How does Simon serve as a model of genuine faith (v. 5b; compare Luke 1:34-38; 4:32, 36)?

3. How does the net overflowing with fish (vv. 6-7) serve as an object lesson? What is Jesus teaching his disciples about the nature of their mission (compare John 21:1-8)?

4. How does Simon respond to the catch of fish (v. 8)? Why would he want Jesus to depart from him (compare 4:42)? What does this reveal about Jesus (see Luke 1:35; 4:34, 41)? Compare this passage with Isaiah 6:1-8. How does Isaiah’s experience in Isaiah 6 shed light on Simon’s experience in Luke 5?

Application
5. When Jesus calls us to follow him, he calls us to become fishers of men and women (v. 10; see Mark 1:17)? How does Jesus transform the image of “catching” fish (from a negative one to a positive one)? Why is it significant that following and fishing are connected? How does this reshape the way we think about following Jesus?

6. When it comes to making disciples, Jeff noted that the fundamental issue is obedience, not competence. How does this reality humble you? How does it encourage you? How should it change the way we look at making disciples?

7. How does Peter’s sense of unworthiness (v. 8) actually qualify him to follow Jesus (compare Luke 5:32)? Why is critical that we recognize our own sinfulness as we seek to make disciples?

8. Make a “Pray-Watch-Bless” list of those you know who are yet-to-believe in Jesus. Write their names down. Begin to pray for them regularly. Watch for God to give you opportunities with them. Look for ways to bless them. As you meet people, add them to your list.
