Series: More Than Conquerors
Today's Message: You Have A Purpose
Scripture: Romans 8:28-30
The #2 searched Scripture (right behind John 3:16) on the internet is Romans 8:28. It’s because we are humans and like to know that things will work out in the end.
The very next verse is where we find out why Romans 8:28 exists:
Romans 8:29 – God’s ultimate goal for each of us is to make us more like Christ.
We are called to be more like Christ.
- Be more like Christ by reading and obeying the Word.
- Be more like Christ by studying His life on earth through the Gospels.
- Be more like Christ by being filled with His Spirit.
- Be more like Christ by doing His work in the world.
God DOES have a purpose, and what appears to us as a meaningless jumble of historical events is not meaningless!
Romans 8:30: A 5-part plan to find your confidence in what God has done.
1. God foreknew. He knew ahead of time that all who enter the body of Christ would be conformed to Him.
2. God predestined. This isn’t predestination to faith, but God’s decision that glory will be the ultimate end of salvation.
3. God called. Somehow the Holy Spirit begins His work in our lives – through hearing the Word – through people and circumstances – wrong choices – to draw us.
4. God justified. (This is a legal term.) We are clothed in Christ’s righteousness.
5. God glorified – like Christ. We received a new nature.
Romans 8:28-30 shows us how much God loves us and does incredible things for us!
Look ahead to Romans 8:31. When Pastor Brian preaches next Sunday pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you as you respond to God’s amazing gifts.
Growth Group Questions:
1. What was your main takeaway from Sunday's message?
How did God use the message to speak to you?
2. Share a story where you, personally, were able to use a bad situation for good. (Ex. “I got a speeding ticket, but I met my husband at traffic school!”)
3. Read Romans 8:28. There are two sides to the same coin.
What things work together for good for us? To whom do things work together for good?
4. Given all our problems and everything that keeps going wrong with us and everything around us, how can Paul say that all things work together for good? Isn’t there evil in the world? How can evil be made to work for good?
5. Explain what Romans 8:28 means and how you might apply it to your life. Does this verse encourage you as you face suffering and the struggle against sin?
6. Read Romans 8:29-30. What did God do for those He foreknew?
Imagine that you are on a long road trip, and poor you, you are literally on the interstate during the Kentucky Wildcats vs. Arkansas Razorbacks first game in Rupp Arena since Coach Calipari left town!
You record the entire game on your YouTube T.V. You don’t want to miss the handshake between Coach Mark Pope and Coach Cal. You want to hear how the crowd reacts to the introduction of former Coach John Calipari.
On the drive home, you listen to the game on the radio – all the game action and the mention of Jay Bilas getting his ice cream. You hear that UK drains a 3-pointer at the buzzard to win the game. When you get home, you watch the game – you already know the outcome. You know what’s going to happen before the tipoff!
In reference to salvation, the prefix pro indicates that the determination in view took place before the world was created (Ephesians 1:4; Rev. 17:8). (The Faith Once For All. By Jack Cottrell. Pg. 388).
