Big Idea: When weary, don’t run from God, run to Him.
I. David’s Weariness (vv. 1-12)
A. David’s been on the run from Saul for about seven years when
he finally says enough (vv. 1-2). David appears to be growing
weary and this is clearly affecting his judgment as he loses sight
of God’s promises and calling.
B. If left unchecked, weariness can have a detrimental impact on
our spiritual life by leading to:
1. Forgetfulness (cf. Ps. 77:11-12) – Weariness can blur our
memory of God’s work in our lives.
2. Loss of peace and joy (v. 1; cf. Jn. 15:11; Phil. 4:4) –
Weariness can take our eyes off the Lord and onto ourselves
and our circumstances, robbing us of peace and joy.
3. Poor decision making (vv. 10-12) – Weariness has a way of
clouding our judgment and leading to poor decisions.
C. David is cunning and shrewd in dealing with the gullible
Achish, king of Gath (vv. 5-12). but David’s fatigue, combined
with Samuel’s death, is leading him to risk more as he is losing
patience and relying more on himself than on God. Even so,
God is faithful and will see David through.
II. God’s Faithfulness (vv. 1-12)
A. David had every reason to stay in Israel as up to this point God
has continually protected him and guided him. But David yields
to discouragement and flees. Despite this, God is faithful to His
promises to David and his line.
B. When we grow weary, remember:
1. You are not alone (cf. Num. 11:10-15; 1 Kgs. 19:4).
2. Focus on God, not on your circumstances (cf. Prov. 3:5-8).
3. God will never leave you or forsake you (Deut. 31:8).
4. Hold fast to God’s Word and His promises (cf. Isa. 40:8) –
Circumstances change; emotions change; God’s Word does
not!
C. When we are weary, it’s easy to forget that trials and challenges
can serve a purpose by drawing us closer to God so that we rely
on His strength, not our own. If you are weary today, don’t run
from God, run to Him (cf. Matt. 11:28-30).
