Sermon Title: Dates and Times
they kept asking him,
Jesus gave them a preview of what was coming:...5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 1:4-5
Jesus introduced this verbiage for the first time and no doubt these apostles were thinking, what???
Jesus said this about the coming Holy Spirit to his disciples on the night he was betrayed.
But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. - John 16:7
“Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
They asked about freeing Israel & restoring the Kingdom.
Before Jesus’ death, he taught about the Kingdom in these terms.
31 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. - Luke 12:29-32
These young Jewish boys following Jesus would have been taught their whole lives about the prophecies of old.
24 For I will gather you up from all the nations and bring you home again to your land... - Ezekiel 36:24-27
They asked, “LORD, has the time come!?”
7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.
Jesus did not rebuke the disciples, nor did He deny that it was still in God’s plan to restore the Kingdom. But here on earth they would never know the specific times and the dates of that restoration.
Meaning, the times & dates are His business, not ours.
Mark 13:33,“ And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!”
What does that mean for us today?
Just like this conversation that Jesus had with the apostles, many believers still act & react the same way.
