Big Idea: Faith in God and His Word allows us to confront and overcome life’s many challenges.
I. Faith is about Trust (v. 6)

1 Samuel 26:1-25

A. Faith & Trust – Many today tend to differentiate faith from trust. But the Bible makes no such distinction. Biblically speaking, faith is a trust in God and His Word, rooted in the reality of God and revealed through obedience to His Word (cf. Heb. 11:1-6).

Hebrews 11:1-6

B. Faith is best revealed when in obedience we stand on:
1. God’s promises (vv. 9-12).
2. God’s sovereignty (vv. 10-11).
C. David is God’s anointed successor to the throne. David knows this but the path there hasn’t been a straight line. Still, David believes God will accomplish His Word and this spurs him on.
II. Faith Forms Character (vv. 9-11)
A. Our choices offer a glimpse of what often drives us (cf. Heb. 11:13-16). For David, his choice to spare Saul reveals a profound trust in God and obedience to His ways. What do our choices reveal about our own trust in God?

Hebrews 11:13-16

B. When faith forms our character, we:
1. Hold fast to what is right (vv. 11-12; cf. 1 Thes. 5:15-22).

1 Thessalonians 5:15-22

2. Allow God’s timing to prevail (v. 10; cf. 1 Thes. 5:23-24).

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

3. Truly repent and turn to the Lord (vv. 21-24; cf. 2 Cor. 7:8- 10).

2 Corinthians 7:8-10

III. Faith Inspires Hope (vv. 6-7)
A. By this point, we see that David’s faith in the Lord and the Lord’s anointing on David have inspired his men to obey his decisions, even if they don’t fully understand them (vv. 7-9). David makes mistakes, but his leadership is rooted in a trust in the Lord—this inspires confidence and hope in others.
B. Faith should cause questions – In a similar way, our own faith should cause others to ask: “What is their story?” “How and why do they live this way?” Do we live lives that demand an explanation?
