Joshua 9:1-27

The Deception of the Gibeonites - Joshua 9

I. The Deceptive Scheme of the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:1-13)
- Description of the Gibeonites' deception: Their strategy to deceive Israel by posing as travelers from a distant land.
- Analyzing their tactics: How they used deception and manipulation to achieve their goal.
- Application: Recognizing the deceptive tactics of the enemy in our lives and the importance of spiritual discernment.

Renewed mind Rom 12:2 - Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

II. Israel's Failure to Seek God's Guidance (Joshua 9:14-15)
- Joshua's mistake: Failing to seek God's counsel before making a covenant with the Gibeonites.
- Consequences of relying on human wisdom: The Israelites' vow to spare the Gibeonites despite their deceit.
- Application: The danger of making decisions based solely on human understanding without seeking God's guidance through prayer and Scripture.

1 John 4:1 - Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

III. Honoring Covenant Commitments (Joshua 9:16-27)
- Israel's integrity: Despite being deceived, the Israelites honor their covenant with the Gibeonites.
- Lesson in faithfulness: The importance of keeping our word, even when it is difficult or inconvenient.
- Application: Upholding our commitments and demonstrating integrity in our relationships, both with God and others.

King Saul later broke the treaty that Joshua had signed and attacked the Gibeonites. Later still, during the time of King David, a famine occurred in Israel. When David asked the Lord about the famine, God said, “It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death” (2 Samuel 21:1). To appease the Gibeonites and put an end to the famine, seven descendants of Saul were given to them to be put to death (2 Samuel 21:6). God healed Israel’s land after that (2 Samuel 21:14).

The fact that the Lord held the Israelites to their covenant with the Gibeonites shows that God requires faithfulness of His people. Breaking a covenant is a serious thing. Finally, the eventual incorporation of the Gibeonites into Israel shows the mercy and grace of God to all people.
