When you think about God, what is the predominant image you have?
* Creator on a beautiful mountainside or ocean seascape? The one who has the ability to bring into being all we know and see and are capable of. The definitive power of the universe.
* King in a throne room? A person who is ultimately in charge. The place where commands are handed out and judgment given for not doing them.
* Savior on a Cross? The one who showed love by doing what we could not do, offering what we cannot earn, giving his all for our eternity.
* Father/Parent? A loving deity who is unconditionally committed to his people. One who gives his name and inheritance to others.
Let me add one more to our list from today's passage: The Good Shepherd.
Good Shepherd vs. Hired Hand
1. Takes responsibility vs. assigns blame
2. Has courage to stay vs. cuts and runs
3. Acts out of compassion vs. greed
What does it mean when Jesus says he lays down his life?
A. Die on a Cross to reconcile humanity through forgiveness.
B. Vulnerable to be rejected and betrayed.
C. Willing to look weak and foolish.
The world needs fewer hired hands and more good shepherds who follow the example of Jesus.
