Introduction
Matthew 6:19-24 ESV
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Lie: More is always better.

Truth: The most meaningful things in life are not things.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Lie: It’s ok to look.

Truth: Contentment is found in Jesus.

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Lie: We can serve two masters.

Truth: We can’t be loyal to God and materialism.
Habit: Declutter your heart.
Philippians 4:11-13 ESV
11 …I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Prayer Requests:

Group Discussion: Have you ever had buyer's remorse? What happened?

Read Aloud: Matt. 6:19-24, Phil. 4:11-13

1. v.21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Have you ever fallen into the trap of more is better? Why does Satan work so hard to keep us discontent? What are the meaningful things in your life that aren’t things?

2. v.23 “but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” How does daydreaming about what we don’t have keep us from experiencing “light?” What is the antidote to coveting?

3. v. 24 “You cannot serve God and money.” Why does Jesus speak of money/materialism as something we might potentially serve? What do our actions say about who we serve? Do you focus more on what we lack materialistically or the abundance we have spiritually through Jesus Christ? How can we do more of the latter?

4. Habit: Declutter your heart. What things can we remove from our lives that don’t matter? What things can we add to our lives that do matter? Do you remember when you first got saved? How do we relearn contentment? What role does God’s mercy play in our contentment?
