I am the bread of Life
I am the Resurrection and the Life
–John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
God had guided the Israelites by a pillar of cloud during the day, and a pillar of fire at night (Ex. 13:21-22).
The Feast of Tabernacles
The Illumination of the Temple.
1. Jesus’ use of the image of Light was unmistakable.
–Isaiah 9:2 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…”
–John 1:4-5 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
2. Then something even more startling and unexpected.
–Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
This should give us pause to reflect.
3. What are some qualities of light?
- It is a positive force, rather than negative.
- casts a shadow larger than itself.
- The greater the darkness, the greater the impact of a single light.
Don’t be intimidated by darkness—just keep shining.
4. Our purpose in the world.
- Be a visible source of light.
- Be an attractive source of light.
V. 16 “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
“good” in Greek:
“Agathos”= good in quality—excellence.
“Kalos” = something is not only excellent, it is also winsome, beautiful, and attractive.
- Be a light that calls attention to God, not to ourselves.
V. 16 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Our good works glorify Him.
Jesus is the Light of the World. But he told us we are too…
So, what kind of light are you shining in your corner of the world?
