Don't Flatter Yourself

Don't Flatter Yourself

There are a few key verses in the book of Romans that have been used to communicate the good news of God’s kingdom for years. It is worth the time to hear them, understand them, and learn to communicate the message well. It turns out that good news travels.

Life Group Questions
1) Two truths were brought up in the message this week. a) God gives life as a gift and b) Humans dishonor the giver of life (…a lot). For those who follow Jesus, we can make sense of these truths even if we are forgetful. How do you think these statements would be received by people you know who don’t follow Jesus? Why would they respond that way?
2) Read Romans 6:1-14. Paul says we need to put sin to death, but it can be easy to allow sin to hide in our lives. What happens when we allow sin to live hidden in our hearts and lives? Why is it so important that we are buried and raised with Christ (3-4)?
3) Continue reading, Romans 6:15-23. The imagery here is slavery and manumission (freedom). It is easy to think of freedom as freedom from all rules or masters, but here is it a transfer: Freedom to live as slaves of righteousness. What is the difference between being a slave to sin and a slave to righteousness? Why is the difference important?
4) If we are now slaves to righteousness then we live free in Christ. What attitudes does Christ want us to have towards those who still lived enslaved to sin?
5) Pray for those you know who are enslaved to sin. Pray for their freedom.
