Dig Deeper:
1. What do you think of when you think of Easter? Why is hope something that we can experience during Easter?
2. How is our experience with Easter different from how the disciples experienced it? What did they endure in the days leading up to Jesus’s death? What might they have been experiencing that we do not have to?
3. Read John 20:1-2. Who was the first to find the empty tomb? What emotions was she experiencing when she found the tomb empty?
4. Read John 20:3-10. Describe how both John and Peter react to this news. How is it similar? How is it different?
5. Read John 20:11-12. How is Mary’s reaction different than the reactions of John and Peter? What does she experience that the others did not?
6. Read John 20:13-14. What are some of the reasons that Mary might not have recognized Jesus in this moment?
7. Mary was healed by Jesus in the past, and now He gives her this mission to serve. How do you think you can use a healing you have experienced to serve someone else?
8. Read John 20:15-16. What is the one thing Jesus did that made her recognize Him?
9. Jesus calls all of His followers by name. How does this level of intimacy reveal how Jesus sees His followers?
10. Read John 20:17-18. What job does Jesus give to Mary? Why do you think He chose her for this task?
11. Read John 20:19. What is the significance of Jesus’s first word being “Peace” to his disciples? Why weren’t they experiencing peace in this moment?
12. Read John 20:20-21. Why does He remind them of peace again? What job does Jesus give His disciples? Why do you think He chose them for this task?
13. Read John 20:26-28. Someone coming back from the dead isn’t part of our everyday life. Why might people object to or be suspicious of the resurrection? What is the difference between doubt and unbelief?
14. Read John 20:29. What do you think Jesus means by this? Who is Jesus describing in this moment?
15. Read John 20:31. Describe what it means to have “life in his name.”

Live It Out:

The resurrection of Christ changes everything! Easter tells us that death doesn’t have the final word. Believing that truth, we have a life of hope. It doesn’t mean that life is perfect all the time, but rather, that we can walk through the hardest times in life with hope. This week, reflect on the following:

1. Remember how the hope of Christ has helped you walk through difficult times and enabled you to persevere. Praise God in the remembering! Then, think of someone in your life that needs hope. Commit to pray for them and for the opportunity to share hope with them.
2. Jesus paid for our sins on the cross. Because we’ve been forgiven, we are also empowered to be forgiving people. Remember how the grace and forgiveness of God has changed the way you respond to those who have hurt you. Spend some time in prayer, thanking God for His great love and for forgiving you. As the Holy Spirit to help you be a more forgiving person. If the Spirit reveals any bitterness or hurt you are holding onto, pray that you would be obedient to forgive.
3. Read Matthew 28:18-20. Pay special attention to the specific action words. The resurrection of Jesus gives our lives purpose. How would you say you are doing in terms of living with purpose? How could you make changes so that you are living more purposefully?
4. Continue spending time in prayer, specifically that the resurrection of Christ would continue to shape you. Pray that you would extend hope, forgiveness, and purpose to those He has placed in your life.
