FORGIVE THEM
Luke 23.32-34

1 Corinthians 1.18 (ESV) For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Galatians 6.14 (ESV) Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Tom Holland: “Exposed to public view like slabs of meat hung from a market stall, troublesome slaves nailed to crosses . . . No death was more excruciating, more contemptible, than crucifixion. To be hung naked, “long in agony, swelling with ugly welts on shoulders and chest”, helpless to beat away the clamorous birds: such a fate, Roman intellectuals agreed, was the worst imaginable.”

Luke 23.32-34 (ESV) Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

Romans 5.6-11 (ESV) At the right time Christ died for the ungodly. . . God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. . . We have now been justified by his blood. . . If while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

James K.A. Smith: "The world apart from God is in sin, and we can’t rescue ourselves. We can’t save ourselves. We can’t work or legislate our way out of it. We can’t educate ourselves out of its grip. We don’t overcome it through progressive achievements or by moral consistency. The antidote for sin is not found by looking to the left or the right. It’s in a power outside of ourselves: the Cross of Christ."

1 Corinthians 15.3 (ESV) . . .that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.

Our sin problem is more serious than we imagine.

If Jesus forgave “them,” he can forgive you. No one is beyond his reach.

1 Timothy 1.15 (ESV) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

Forgiveness is hard, but it is crucial to relationships.
