Spiritual Certainty - 1 John 5:11-21
In this short, yet powerful book written by the the disciple John, we can prepare to be challenged to live out our faith in obedience towards God and love for others. Throughout the chapters, he implores his readers to "walk in the light" in a world that is increasingly dark. We trust God will whisper to each of us as we spend some time examining His truth and study 1 John together.

1 John 5:11-13
11 "And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life."
“That you might know”
Eternal life is possible. It’s found in Jesus Christ. And if you have a relationship with Christ, you have eternal life. You don’t have to wonder or wish or hope or doubt… You can know, for certain.

If you go back to John’s gospel, as he comes to the end in chapter 20, he tells us why and for whom he wrote: “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).
= John wrote his gospel for seekers, so that they would come to believe.
= He wrote his letter (1 John) for believers, so they would come to know.

We can begin to live with a spiritual certainty and confidence in God because of our faith in Jesus and all he secures for us.
God is dialed in with us - prayer matters because of our relationship with God; we’re not trying to gain his attention; we have it because He is ours and we are His!
This confidence—that believers can approach God and that he listens to their prayers—is based on the same confidence that they are his children and that they have eternal life (5:13). Confidence means boldness or freedom to speak to Christ (see Hebrews 4:16).
Hebrews 4:16
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1 John 5:20-21
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

IN JESUS ALONE
John’s Gospel contains many of Jesus’ words that testify to this fact recorded in 1 John 5:11—eternal life is found only by believing in Jesus Christ.
John 3:15–16
“Everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
John 3:36
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”
John 4:14
“Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 5:24
“I assure you, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life” (nlt).
John 5:26
“For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself”
John 5:39–40
“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
John 6:40
“For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life-that I should raise them at the last day” (nlt).
John 6:47
“I assure you, anyone who believes in me already has eternal life” (nlt).
John 6:54
“Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them at the last day” (nlt).
John 6:68
“Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life’”
John 10:28
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”
John 11:25
“Jesus told her, I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else, will live again” (nlt).
John 14:6
“Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
John 20:31
“But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

John 20:31

John ends his letter not with a doxology, a prayer or a benediction. He ends this letter with the words “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
Why?
John begins his letter with a clear claim of revelation, …God has revealed himself in Christ. He has made himself manifest to us not just in order that we may see him - but in order that we may know him.
We are here precisely because, and only because, God has decisively acted in Christ to make himself manifest to us. We did not seek him out. We did not find him. We did not discover him. We were shown him. He showed himself to us.
So don’t get sidetracked by anything other then Jesus…stay anchored to him! John wants us anchored to Jesus above all things. We know what the stakes are.
*We know that anything that is not orthodoxy - tends to drift toward idolatry.
“Little children, let us keep ourselves from idols.”
Quote:
An idol is anything you turn to for help
when God told you to turn to him for help.
