Every religion must answer the question, “What is the meaning of life?” It also has made it mainstream in our culture as a often asked sometimes answered question like the New York Times Magazine interview of Yo-Yo Ma just this weekend entitled, “The Meaning of Life.”
I want to go ahead and tell you the Christian answer to the question about meaning of life. In fact, It is put succinctly in the Westminster Small Catechism as “The chief aim for man is to glorify God and enjoy him for eternity.”
Found in 1 Corinthians 10:31: So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
It is also the chief aim of Jesus’ teaching in our passage this morning.
Jesus offers the Greeks a 1) picture, 2) promise, and 3) personal invitation to "come and see" what the meaning of life is all about. It will be seen in his life, death, burial and resurrection.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor, scholar, and martyr wrote, “When Christ calls a man he calls him to come and die.”
The key to finding true life is extreme commitment to Christ. Not just a toe in the water holding your options open but burning your bridges to any other avenue of living. Theology of the cross and glory is a major theme of John’s gospel. The cross leads to glory. Death leads to life.
Extreme commitment to Christ leads to the meaning of life.
