Today’s Key Passage
Romans 1:16

Background of Romans
Author: Paul
Audience: The church in Rome
Date: 57AD
Key points in the book of Romans
1. There is no one righteous not even one. – Romans 3:10
2. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God Romans 3:23
3. I’m powerless to help myself. Romans 5:6
1. Jesus is Lord

Romans 1:5 - Through him (Jesus) we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.

Matthew 28:18-20 - And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
John 14:15 (ESV) - “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”

Galatians 2:20 - “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
2. God hates sin.

Romans 1:18 - For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth by their wickedness.”

God hates sin.
Because it elevates us above God and it hurts people.

We live in an era where people are actively suppressing the truth.

We are reaping the results of a society that has been rejecting God for decades
3. God defines his creation

Romans 1:19-20 - “Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities- His eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
4. Worship God alone.

Romans 1:24-25 - Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Romans 1:26-27 - Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts, even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Sex is reserved for a man and
woman who are in a covenant
relationship called marriage.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 - “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you received from God? You were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
5. The Gospel has the power to save us.

It’s God’s kindness that leads us to repentance.

Romans 1:16 - For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew then to the Gentile.
