The Gospel is the Revelation of God’s Righteousness

1. The gospel is a debt (14–15)
‘I am under obligation’ = translated ‘I am a debtor’
a. God took care of what I owed and because of that I am in His debt.
b. If the gospel has come to us, we have no liberty to keep it to ourselves.

Good news is for sharing. We are under obligation to make it known to others.

2. The gospel is God’s power for salvation (v16)

3. The gospel reveals God’s righteousness (v17)
Within the Gospel the Righteousness of God is revealed:

The Gospel (Good News): Life, Death , Resurrection & the 2nd Coming
The righteousness of God.

Righteousness’ describes his character, together with his actions which are in keeping with his character.

1.Divine attributes
2.Divine Activity
3.Divine Achievement
1.Unrighteousness
-“I know I am awful, but I won’t accept God’s provision to be made right before a holy God.”

2. Self Righteousness
-"I can provide everything I need to be made right before a holy God.”

3. True Righteousness
-“I receive what God has given so that I might be made right before a holy God.”
The Darkness of Unrighteousness/Sin (1:18-32)

-It is the revelation of God’s righteousness that contrasts the darkness of sin.
-It isn’t God’s hate that stands against sin, it’s God’s love

The Gospel is the message of God’s love.
Romans 1:18-20 (ESV)

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteous-ness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

The Revelation of God is so good it is literally imprinted upon the hearts of all man giving everyone an opportunity to connect with their creator
Romans 1:21-23 (ESV)
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

Left to our own agendas we envisage aCreator that servesthe whims and desires of His creation.

Romans 1:24-25 (ESV)
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Romans 1:26-27 (ESV)
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

-All sins stand in contrast to God’s perfect character

Romans 1:28-32 (ESV)
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteous-ness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malicious-ness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors
of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

It isn’t God’s hate that stands against sin, it’s God’s love.
