Sunday Service

Thanks for joining us this morning! Sermon notes and scripture are below.

Locations & Times

501 Whitelaw Rd, Guelph, ON N1K 1E7, Canada

Sunday 9:00 AM

Sunday 10:45 AM

The Place

“The third day…”
A Wedding — a big event. Usually lasted
for seven days.
Jesus honoured a wedding ceremony!
Cana in Galilee — 11 km from home
Two miracles were performed here.
This is the home of Nathanael. (21:2)

The People

Jesus’ mother — Mary
• Her name is never used in this book.
• Jesus calls her “dear woman” (Ma’am)
• She must have had connections with this wedding family.
Jesus — He has been identified as the Messiah and Lamb.
The disciples — There are only five of them at this point.
Jesus’ brothers —
“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers
James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?” - Matthew 13:55
“For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.” - John 7:5
Where was Joseph?

The Problem
The host of a wedding had run out of wine. Wine was a symbol of joy and
to not have enough was a great embarrassment.
Mary makes Jesus aware of the problem, but He responds oddly.
“Why do you involve me?” (Literally, “What to me and to you, woman?”)
Jesus also said, “My time has not yet come” and by that He may have been
saying, “Are you ready for this to begin?”
Mary shows her faith by saying to the
servants, “Whatever He says, do it!”

The Power

Jesus tells the servant to fill six large jars
with water and take a taste of this “water”
to the host of the banquet. They did so!
This would have been almost 600 liters,
150 gallons, of the best wine ever made!
Some say, “It wasn’t fermented wine.” This misses the point of the
story and refutes other Scriptures!
Some say, “It was only because they had nothing else to drink,” but in
John 4, the point of the chapter is drinking water.
What we know for sure is that drunkenness is sin!
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” - Ephesians 5:18
“But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a person do not even eat.” - 1 Corinthians 5:11

The Product
1. This is the first miracle, so His ministry begins.
2. Jesus revealed His glory (which means His divinity)!
3. His disciples followed Him in faith because of this event.
My Probing
1. Do you understand that Jesus is interested in the smallest aspects of
your life, and He wants to hear from you and help you?
2. Are you ready to say, “Whatever He says, I’ll do it!”?
