Growing in the Practice of Bible Reading - Phil Kendon

Growing in the Practice of Bible Reading - Phil Kendon

If we think of prayer like one arm of the Christian life, the other arm must be the scriptures. This book which we know as the Bible is actually a library of 66 books written by more than 40 authors over a span of 1,500 years. And yet it is one continuous story of God revealing himself to us through historical events, poetry, prophecy, and teaching. This book is the primary way God has been speaking to people since the beginning and reading the Bible is a vital element of the Christian life - just like prayer.

1. Scripture introduces us to God

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

We wouldn’t know anything about the character of God if we didn’t read about it in the scriptures.
2. Scripture leads us to Jesus

2 Timothy 3:14–15 (NIV)
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

The whole of the Old Testament leads up to Jesus and the whole of the New Testament describes his work.
3. Scripture shapes our lives

Matthew 7:24–27 (NIV)
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

The scriptures influence our behaviour and lead us into a life that is pleasing to God.
4. Scripture is a weapon in the spiritual battle

Romans 8:38–39 (NIV)
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus used scripture to defend against the devil’s attacks, and so can we.
5. Scripture strengthens our faith

The things we read in this book help us to grow in trusting God.
