Distractions are everywhere. We have phones dinging and watches buzzing and TVs playing in every space we walk into. We are encouraged to multi-task and to cram in as much as possible. We love to feel productive. Busyness is a badge. Distraction is an unintended but real consequence of life.
What if distraction has invaded our faith lives? What if, however good our intentions, we have allowed the things of “earth” to cloud out Jesus’ things of “heaven”?
We too have distractions that create opportunities for us to step out from behind Jesus.
1. Busyness.
2. Low self esteem caused by feelings of inadequacy.
3. High self-confidence brought on by earthly success.
The key to counter distraction is to remain behind Jesus or as he says, “deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow.” Deny yourself by accepting his will over your own. Remember from dust you have come and to dust you will return therefore turn around and believe the good news which forgives sins and makes you right with God. Then you are ready to take up your cross. Your cross will not have the impact as is on the world, but it will on you. Taking up your cross is accepting the ways of God to accomplish the will of God. Downward nobility is the path of all people who are Christ followers. They take the humble seats at the banquets and the last place in the line. They are willing to serve without need for credit and willing to allow others. Following is walking close enough to entrust in his power to accomplish his will through his ways. None of this is possible without the Spirit working in and through you. Working in your power leads to burnout. Working in his power leads to breakthroughs.
