Dig Deeper:
1. How familiar are you with the story of David and Goliath? If you have heard it in the past, what stood out to you the most when originally hearing it?
2. What ways do you think God was developing David as he was shepherding his flock and waiting to become king? What are some ways the Lord is shaping your faith in the mundane tasks of everyday life?
3. Read 1 Samuel 17:1-3 and Exodus 23:31. What do you know about the Philistines? What made them different than the Israelites? What do you think the two different armies were thinking at this moment?
4. Read 1 Samuel 17:4-7. Describe Goliath and what he was wearing in your own words. What would be the most intimidating to you of all that is described?
5. What giants do we face in our culture today? What does it feel like to lose one’s courage against these giants?
6. Read Samuel 17:8-9. Is this a good tactic to use? Why or why not?
7. Read Samuel 17:10-11. What does Goliath mean when he says, “I defy the ranks of Israel today”?
8. Why was King Saul terrified in this moment? What was he focused on? What wasn’t he focused on? How did this affect the other Israelite men who are with him?
9. Read 1 Samuel 17:23-26. How is David’s perspective instantly different than those of the people who have been listening to Goliath for forty days?
10. How well are you stewarding your smaller faith moments, the moments when few people, if any, see you? What does it look like for you to put your faith in action?
11. What is courage? Is fear a part of courage?
12. Read 1 Samuel 17:32-37. Why is David sharing his past experiences with Saul? Who is being emphasized in doing so?
13. Read 2 Timothy 1:7. How do “power, love, and sound judgment” all work together against a spirit of fear? Why are all three important components?
14. Read 1 Samuel 17:41-45. In what ways could we use David’s response to Goliath similarly against giants we currently face?
15. Read 1 Samuel 17:46-49. Explain the difference when someone is fighting man versus fighting God. Discuss the differences.
16. Read Colossians 2:14-15. Explain the difference between fighting for victory and fighting from victory.
17. What takeaways did you walk away with after hearing this familiar story again? Did you learn something new or gain a different perspective? Discuss.
18. How should the gospel, the fact that Jesus defeated the enemies of Satan, sin, and death for us and that we can experience victory when we put our trust in Him, eradicate fear and build your faith in your life and leadership?

Live It Out:

What giants in your life need to fall? Is it bitterness, anger, fear, hopelessness, greed, control, shame? What are the steps you need to take, with God’s help, to defeat it? In the midst of the struggle, believe that nothing is too big for God. This week remember that, when facing a giant, David:

1. Had a faith-filled perspective in the face of fear. In the face of your giant, preserve a faith-filled perspective by continually spending time in prayer in the God’s Word. Live with a point of view that is counter cultural, especially when it comes to facing fears and overcoming obstacles.
2. Cultivated courage from remembering God’s faithfulness. Spend time writing down all the ways you have seen God’s faithfulness in your past. How has He provided for you? Encouraged you? Loved you? Develop courage from these past proofs of God’s closeness to you so that you can face fear bravely.
3. Knew the battle belongs to God. Don’t fight your battles for victory; fight them from victory. Write down all the ways in which God is bigger than your giant. Pray for God to provide you with the strength you need to fight from a place of victory.
