Are You Exchanging?

Are You Exchanging?

Did you realize that Paul's letter to the Romans is his only NT letter to a church he hadn't planted or at least visited? Paul was eager to keep taking the good news of Jesus where it had never been heard, and Rome could be a great place for launching a gospel ministry into Spain. But in many ways, Paul was an unknown to the church there. So, rather than spend a lot of time addressing their dysfunctions (like he does, say, with the Corinthians), Paul offers an overview of his teaching, beginning with foundational understandings about the gospel and its implications for unity between Jews and Gentiles. (This was one of the great social divides of the time and presented a key challenge for the Roman church.) Join in as we explore how these same gospel foundations have the power to bring hope and unity in our lives still today!

This Week's Sermon: Are You Exchanging?
Three Notes About Romans

1. Paul is writing to a church he did not plant and has never visited

2. The Jew/Gentile split (prevalent in all early churches) is likely pronounced in Rome.

3. Paul desires to use Rome as a missionary base to reach the unreached!
The Righteousness of God

1. A divine attribute

2. A divine activity

3. A divine achievement

Beyond Sunday

Growing with Jesus isn’t just for Sundays. Make it an everyday, everywhere, with everyone mission by going “beyond Sunday”!

Engage in these resources on your own and with your Grow Group*:

Think it out
• What has been your understanding of God’s wrath? Video: npberean.org/beyond21
• Watch this video: npberean.org/beyond22. How does cosmic grandeur make God evident to all?

Talk it out
• What can cloud a right view of God’s wrath?
• Consider this C.S. Lewis quote:
npberean.org/beyond23. Why do we exchange “infinite joy” for lesser things? How are we too “easily pleased?”

Live it out
• Write down at least one way you have exchanged truth for lies. Pray daily, for God’s help to choose truth instead.
• Listen to “Firm Foundation” daily. Each time ask, “Am I living out this truth today?” npberean.org/beyond24.

* Connecting in community with other believers is crucial for spiritual growth. Explore group options at npberean.org/gg or contact Andrew (andrewwalker@npberean.org, 308-532-7448).

Next Week's Sermon

Paul has just spent time showing how non-Jews (Gentiles) are without excuse before God (because what is plain to know about him - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen in creation). Gentiles continually exchange the glory of God for lesser idols and bring condemnation on themselves in the form of God's wrath. But what about Jews? They are God's chosen people. They have the Law of Moses. They assumed they were good with God regardless of their actions. But were they? Paul turns his attention to them at the beginning of chapter 2. And as we see how he addresses the moralistic Jews, we expect to hear truth for ourselves!
