Happy Are the Sad

Recap
Jesus' target audience is the disciples.
Blessed - happier than happy
The beginning of the Sermon on the Mount is concerned with how to be happy.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit" denotes spiritual poverty, not physical poverty.
Happy Are the Sad
This is referring to spiritual sadness as opposed to simply emotional sadness.
Two Tragedies That Make the Church Unattractive to the Outside World
1. False Piety
2. False Joy

Both are born of a lack of deep conviction of sin or a superficial understanding of happiness and joy.

What Is This "Mourning?"
Deep conviction of sin brought about after the truly being poor in spirit. It comes after self-examination.
But What About the Happy?
Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.
What kind of comfort exists for the mourners?
- Assurance of coming glory and freedom
- Knowledge that God is working now among the unbelievers to bring them to Christ
