Who is Lord?

Who is Lord?

Did you realize that Paul's letter to the Romans is his only NT letter to a church he hadn't planted or at least visited? Paul was eager to keep taking the good news of Jesus where it had never been heard, and Rome could be a great place for launching a gospel ministry into Spain. But in many ways, Paul was an unknown to the church there. So, rather than spend a lot of time addressing their dysfunctions (like he does, say, with the Corinthians), Paul offers an overview of his teaching, beginning with foundational understandings about the gospel and its implications for unity between Jews and Gentiles. (This was one of the great social divides of the time and presented a key challenge for the Roman church.) Join in as we explore how these same gospel foundations have the power to bring hope and unity in our lives still today!

This Week's Sermon: Who is Lord?

Paul's Journeys

1st Journey: 47-48 AD 2nd Journey: 49-52 AD 3rd Journey: 53-57 AD (this is when he likely wrote Romans) 4th Journey: 61-63 AD

Three Notes About Romans

1. Paul is writing to a church he did not plant and has never visited

2. The Jew/Gentile split (prevalent in all early churches) is likely pronounced in Rome.

3. Paul desires to use Rome as a missionary base to reach the unreached!
Beyond Sunday

Growing with Jesus isn’t just for Sundays. Make it an everyday, everywhere, with everyone mission by going “beyond Sunday”!

Engage in these resources on your own and with your Grow Group*:

Think it out
• How is Paul’s letter to the Romans different from his other letters? Why does this matter?
• For further study as we begin Romans:
- Overview video: npberean.org/beyond15
- “Lord” word study: npberean.org/beyond16

Talk it out
• Paul calls Christians to be apostles and saints. What does that practically look like in your life?
• What area of life do you struggle to allow God to control (make him Lord)?

Live it out
• What steps of faith and obedience will you take this week to make Jesus your Lord?
• As you listen to “Cornerstone” daily this week, ask, “How does my life evidence this today?” (npberean.org/beyond17)

Next Week's Sermon

Gospel (good news) truths are foundational for Paul's life and mission, so we'll be considering four gospel questions Paul answers affirmatively. After seeing his heart, we'll have the opportunity to explore our own hearts and ponder how we would answer these questions for our own lives.
