Sermonic Title: “A Fresh Start”

The Key Idea: A Fresh Start Makes Life Better.

I. A desire is essential to make a fresh start.

III. A determination is essential to make a fresh start.

IV. A detachment is essential to make a fresh start.

From the Pastor‘s Desk

“BE MINDFUL OF THE COMPANY YOU KEEP”
(Proverbs 13:20 - ESV)

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
But the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Wisdom is essential because it provides people with practical knowledge and habits that give people the best chance for success and happiness in life. One way to attain wisdom is by keeping company with wise people.Proverbs 13:20a says: “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise.”

Nevertheless, keeping company with simpletons is destructive. Proverbs 13:20b says: “But the companion of fools will suffer harm.” In the worst scenario, a lot of people are lying dead in their graves because of the bad company they aligned themselves with.

My advice to everyone, especially young people, is to “Be Mindful Of The Company You Keep.” Align yourselves with wise individuals because this will enable you to become wise rather than suffer harm which results from fellowshipping with people who are described in Proverbs 13:20b as “fools.”

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

“St. John exists, as A Kingdom Building Church in two communities,
to Evangelize sinners and Equip saints,
who are Edifying and Enjoying one another,
to Exalt the SAVIOR” (Mt. 28:18-20).

CHURCH UPDATE

On Friday, January 26th, at 7:00 p.m., we are scheduled to have our annual Church Update in the Fellowship Hall of our South Campus. St. John members, who are interested in knowing about the business of our church and the pastor’s prospectus, are encouraged to prayerfully attend.

UNPLUGGED SUNDAY

On this fourth Sunday, January 28th, we may dress comfortably and casually because it will be Unplugged Sunday. In both of our Worship Celebrations (North Campus at 9:00 a.m. and South Campus at 11:00 a.m.), God’s word will be proclaimed, and our Praise and Worship singers will be singing. Please plan to attend and invite others to attend, especially young people.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER

Intercessory Prayer is when believers pray on behalf of others. James 5:16b says: “Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” When believers pray for one another, people are blessed. For example, Peter was delivered from prison because the church prayed incessantly to God on his behalf (Acts 12:5-17). Because God answers prayer, please pray daily for others and the following:

St. John Missionary Baptist Church: Ask God to grow our congregation spiritually, numerically, and financially. Also, pray to Godregarding our Building Project, and intercede on behalf of parishioners who are shut in with COVID.

“GIVING GOD OURSELVES”

Socrates had a trusted servant who, seeing others give presents to his master, came to him one day and said, “Because I have nothing else to give you, Master, I here give you myself.”Socrates saw the earnestness of the servant and said, “Do so.” After bestowing upon him gifts and advancing him to the head of his servants, Socrates called him one day and said, “I now give you back to yourself better than when I received you.”

My beloved, God bestows rich spiritual blessings on believers who give their lives to Him. Jesus said: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Mt. 6:33). Perhaps, many fail to give as they should because they have failed to first give their lives to God. When people first give their lives to God, people then enjoy giving their tithes and offerings to God.

Believers please God by faithfully and generously giving Him tithes and offerings. Tithing is giving to God 10% of our gross income/increase (which belongs to God), and the remaining 90% is ours to utilize wisely. Our offerings are what God inspires us to give from the remaining 90% which is in addition to our tithes. Our tithes and offerings should be set aside before paying anything else (first fruits).

At St. John, we give in person during Sunday Morning Worship Celebrations, by mailing or dropping off our tithes and offerings at our Administration Building or South Campus. We also give online through our website (sjmbc.org).

MEMORANDUM

Our Worship Celebrations: We have two in-person Worship Celebrations on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. (the North Campus) and 11:00 a.m.(the South Campus). Also, our virtual audience is proliferating. Let’s continue to share with others how they can view our Worship Celebrations via live streaming (YouTube) or hear them via podcasts. For more information, you may visit our website at sjmbc.org.

Our Family Life Center: The city of Richmond has approved the revision of our design and granted us a building permit to build our Family Life Center. We have now proceeded to the next step which is negotiating the total cost of the project. Please pray daily asking God to direct us regarding our Family Life Center which will be adjacent to our current sanctuary at the North Campus, consisting of a gymnasium, weight room, and game room (mainly for kids). Also, a parking lot will be across the street from this edifice.

Many of us made a commitment that we fulfilled, but some have not. May God bless each of us who have already fulfilled our pledge and others who have made “Building Fund” contributions. I encourage everyone (if you have not already done so) to contribute financially (in full or in installments) as soon as possible to this building project by choosing one of the following tiers:

1) $10,000.00 or more
2) $5,000.00 to $9,999.00
3) $1,000.00 to $4,999.00
4) $500.00 to $999.00
