The Purposes of 1st Timothy

1. To refute and correct false teachers

2. To establish rules for the household of God

Encouraging the Saints

“Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.”
1 Timothy 5:1


What This Reminds Us Regarding Elders

1. An elder must remain above reproach in all his dealings with the saints

2. The position of Elder is a position of Servant Leadership.

3. We must be on guard against abusive leadership

The Church and Caring for the Most Vulnerable

1. Widows were one of the most vulnerable classes of the ancient world.

2. The Church replied to this need by organizing care for the widows.

1. Our faith is shown by how we care for those in need.
Matthew 25:34-40, James 1:27

2. The Church is not responsible for everyone!

- Only those with a true need. Vs 9-10

- Only those who have a testimony of faith.

3. The Family is the first line of defence.
1 Timothy 5:4

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8

What Do We Need To Do?

1. Pray for the Heart of God for the vulnerable

2. Seek to serve those in need

3. Let our love for one another draw others to Jesus
