Nehemiah Chapter 13 (4)
Series: The Call to the Wall Title: Keep the Fire Lit Part 4--A Sabbath Devotion Devotion. The Bible has much to say about our devotion and the things that vie for our hearts. There is a constant pull from Satan, the World and my own sinful nature that pulls me from God. In Nehemiah 13 the people have wandered from God. In their Devotion. So how do I prevent that? It’s not as difficult as you think. Nehemiah 13:22. And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day.

Is my priority Spiritual wealth or Material wealth?
The invitation today is not to choose Spiritual wealth, it’s deeper. The invitation is to rest in Jesus.

You and I are responsible for your own growth in Christ! We cannot rely on others

Under that Sabbath law: one could not….
1. Leave his home on the Sabbath (Exodus 16:29),
2. Build a fire (Exodus 35:3), and
3. Work, including the animals (Deuteronomy 5:14).
4. A person breaking the Sabbath law was to be put to death (Exodus 31:15; Numbers 15:32–35).
The Sabbath was not meant for the people to do nothing, but to proactively worship God, spend time with family and trust God to provide for them.

The People have a Priority Problem!
How to Keep Priorities:
1. Shut the door on distractions.
2. Guard your heart.
3. Remove anything that keeps you from devotion to God.
4. If your enemy can’t stop you, he’ll try to distract you!
5. What we often think is an opportunity, God calls a distraction.
6. Learn the art of saying, “NO!”

Do we Celebrate the Sabbath?
As the people of the New Testament, we are not commanded in scripture to keep the Sabbath.
As the people of the New Testament, we are not commanded in scripture to keep the Sabbath.
We are to worship/rest in God every day, not just on Saturday or Sunday.
1. With the Old Testament Law, the Jews were constantly "working" to make themselves acceptable to God. Trying to obey a myriad of do’s and don’ts of the ceremonial law, the Temple law, the civil law, etc.
2. They couldn’t possibly keep all of the law;
3. So God provided a system of sin offerings and sacrifices so they could come to Him for forgiveness and restore fellowship with Him, but only temporarily.

Jesus was sent so that we might rest in God and in what He has provided.
There is no other Sabbath rest besides Jesus. He alone satisfies the requirements of the Law, and He alone provides the sacrifice that atones for sin.
