Nehemiah Chapter 13
Series: The Call to the Wall Title: Keeping the Fire Lit pt. 2 “The main thing is to keep the Main thing, the Main thing” Nehemiah has dealt with a serious compromise in the priesthood and in the Temple. But he’s not done yet. The House of God is being neglected because the people have lost their sense of the Main thing. We must constantly course-correct to be sure our priorities are in line with Gods. This week we’ll continue to learn how to do that. Consider this an early New Years resolution challange!

Invitation: To remember ‘who’ you are to change your behavior
When we first encounter Jesus, what’s more important? Our behavior? Or our identity? as we get older in Christ, what's more important, our behavior ? Our identity?
Spiritual disciplines are not just habits, rather they are a way of life based on who we are in Christ!

Focus on Who? Not Do!
“Churches don’t have giving problems; they have intimacy problems. Teach people to be intimate with God, then they will be generous.” Jay Iranon
Somebody once asked American Episcopal bishop Phillip Brooks what he would do to resurrect a dead church, and he replied, ‘take up a missionary offering’.
a. Giving to others is 1 secret of staying alive and fresh in the Christian life.
b. Someone wrote in Modern Maternity magazine, “The world is full of two kinds of people, the givers, and the takers. The takers eat well--but the givers sleep well.”

When God’s people start to decline spiritually, one of the 1st things to go is generosity.
a. “Generosity is both a thermometer and thermostat. It reads where we are and helps set it at the right level! W. Wiersbe.”
b. They didn’t have a money problem; they had an identity problem. They forgot who they were.

You do what you do because of what you think of you.
If you don’t like your behavior, change your thinking.
Change your perception of who you are!
Change your perception of who you are!
You do what you do because what you think of you.
Research shows we sub-consciously ask these questions:
i. Who am I?
ii. What kind of situation is this?
iii. What would someone like me do in this situation?

If one continues to believe what they think of themselves--Not by the Word of God--they will never change
