“Memory is powerful because most of the time it serves us well, forming the foundation of our knowledge of the world and of ourselves.”
- Dr. Daniel Schacter
Explicit (declarative)
Implicit (non-declarative)
“Implicit memory refers to nonconscious, unintentional influences of past experiences on current behavior and performance.”
Mary’s memories to shape our present manners.
How many of us like surprises?
What would you rather receive for a Christmas present:
- A gift you knew was coming
- A gift you didn’t see coming
Surprises are things we receive that we didn’t see coming.
- A poor (probably uneducated) teenage girl
- Lived in the middle of podunk Nazareth
- Engaged/betrothed to a poor carpenter named Joseph
She was going to have a baby…
as a virgin
God’s surprises require our surrender.
1. How do you know the surprise is from God?
1. Where am I at with the Lord?
1. Where am I at with the Lord?
2. What is the Lord calling or asking me to do?
God’s surprises are ultimately about His mission in the world through me, not my mission in the world for me.
1. Where am I at with the Lord?
2. What is the Lord calling or asking me to do?
3. How do I initially process the call or ask?
"How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."
God’s surprises will only be able to be delivered by God.
2. What do you do with God’s surprises?
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”
1. You’ll need to have faith that God loves you.
“Greetings, you who are highly favored.”
2. You’ll need to have faith that God is with you.
“The Lord is with you.”
3. You’ll need to have faith that God has the details covered.
“The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”
4. You’ll need to have faith that what is impossible to you is possible to God.
“For no word from God will ever fail.”
