Stand Sunday - Good Works

The apostle Paul was prolific in planting churches in areas where the Gospel was previously unheard and one such place was the island of Crete off the coast of Greece. As a hub with many harbors and great reach into the ancient world, Paul strategically launched a network of churches on Crete. The churches, however, were quickly in danger from false teachers distorting the purity and simplicity of the Gospel - salvation through Christ alone by faith alone. Paul, therefore, assigns Titus to build up these churches by appointing elders who can rebuke those swayed by this false gospel and teach truth. He spends much of the letter explaining how believers in Christ comprise a new household and even a new humanity through their faith in Christ alone. As we study Titus, we’ll see how authentic faith must inevitably make a difference in our practice of godliness. And when we fail, we have a wonderful Savior who has brought us into his house – into a new way of living – the true Good Life!

What was one thing from this week’s sharing that impacted/challenged me?

Treasuring God: What is God showing me about himself?

Being Transformed: How is God challenging me to grow? What is my next step in this?

Loving Others: Who do I have opportunity to live out these truths with this week?

Pursuing Unity: How can we take a step in this area, to unite us more closely together?

Next Week's Sermon

One popular evangelism strategy starts with the line, “If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?” Because of course, unless Jesus returns first, death is coming for all of us. For many people, this thought creates fear and uncertainty. But for the believer, it should lead not to despair but to hope – a state of readiness and expectation. We can foster this hope in our hearts and minds by letting the signs of our impending death (e.g. aging, suffering, sorrow, loss) remind us of the great glory that will be revealed in us. As our earthly bodies fade, we look forward to the imperishable ones God has promised us. This is how we prepare to die!
