Prayer and Praise

Romans 12:15 says, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Take a moment to let us know how we can rejoice with you or bring a need before God with you.

1 Timothy 5:17-18 (ESV) - Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”

1 Thessalonians 5:12 (ESV) - We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,

Be sure to honor Elders who exhibit godliness and lead well.
1. Honor Elders by acknowledging their faithful service in a variety of ways.
2. Honor Elders by intentionally pursuing a godly life.

Hebrews 13:17 (ESV) – Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
1 Timothy 5:19-20 (ESV) - Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.

3. Honor Elders by guarding their reputation.
1 Timothy 5:21 (ESV) - In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.

4. Honor Christ before honoring any Elder.
1 Timothy 5:22-23 (ESV) - Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 23(No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)

5. Honor the position of Elder by not placing a man there too quickly.

1 Timothy 3:6 (ESV) - He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
1 Timothy 5:24-25 (ESV) - The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

5. Honor the judgement of God.
Discussion Questions

1. What is one thing about this passage that stood out to you that you want to make sure and talk about with this group?

2. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14. Discuss how these verses describe both the responsibility of the saints and the responsibility of Elders.

3. Read 1 Timothy 5:21. In discussing this verse it was said, “Honor Christ before honoring any Elder”? Why?

4. Read Hebrews 13:17. In what way can you make the role of Elder a joy and not a burden?

5. Accountability is important. Recall ways that Crossroads holds our Elders accountable. Is there something more you would like to see Crossroads consider as a way of holding our Elders accountable? Feel free to pass along suggestions to Pastor Scott at syoder@crossroadsefc.com.
