THE NAME EMMANUEL INSTRUCTS US ABOUT THE DEPTH OF HIS LOVE

God with us – Look carefully about the very first word…GOD

This baby born in Bethlehem is identified.

God put on skin and came down to us in the person of Jesus.

1 John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.”

Verse 14 “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth”

Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God”

Hebrews 1:3 “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature”

1st Timothy 3:16 “He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”

How deep is His love for us?

Any answer that I may provide feels insufficient and inadequate – BUT I CAN SAY THIS...the name EMMANUEL...The meaning of that name: God with us – SPEAKS VOLUMES!

2.THE NAME EMMANUEL ENCOURAGES US IN THE TRIALS OF THIS LIFE

There are several names that the angel Gabriel could have referenced here

He could have said, “And you shall call His name Jehovah Shalom, El Elyon, Elohim, or Jehovah Nissi

In His sovereign wisdom, the Lord gave Gabriel crystal clear instructions to proclaim that His name would be called, Emmanuel – GOD IS WITH US

The author of Hebrews explains to us why that is so important.

Hebrews 4:15 “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses”

To the ancient Greeks, the primary attribute of their gods was apatheia, the inability to feel anything. Jesus isn’t like that. He knows and He feels what we go through.

The ancient Greek word translated sympathize literally means “to suffer along with.” What makes the difference is that Jesus added humanity to His deity and lived among us.

Saints, because His name is Emmanuel...because God came to be with us – we can be encouraged in the trials of this life

THE NAME EMMANUEL EQUIPS US TO BE READY FOR ETERNITY

The angel Gabriel not only said that God would be with us but He also explained why:

Matthew 1:21 “He will save his people from their sins”

If our greatest need was education, God would have sent a teacher.
Money – banker
Advice – counselor
Hunger – farmer
Pleasure – entertainer

But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent a Savior!

Colossians 1:21-22 “Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds as expressed in your evil actions. But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before him”
