“Insider Threat" Sermon Questions
1. How did your parents shape your view of conflict?
2. What themes or patterns have you noticed about your conflicts? What does that show you about your heart?
3. How does our culture disciple us to approach conflict? According to our culture, what are often the causes of conflict?
4. What practical implications are there to James' teaching that all conflict flows out of spiritual adultery (v4)?
5. What is your initial response to this quote by Dan Doriani describing verse 7, "We submit when we obey a command that seems hard or strange. Such submission signifies that we have humbled ourselves before the Lord"? How does your heart tend to react to hard and strange commands? What is one area of you life that you struggle to submit to your Father?
6. Through James, God calls us in verse 8 to repent of our outward sins ("hands" = words, actions, thoughts) as well as the sins of our "heart" (i.e., the inner sins moving the outer sins). Is it harder for you to repent of your outward sins or the sins of your heart? Why do you think that is?
7. How does this passage or sermon encourage you with gospel hope?
