The church is…
A people of transformation.

The church is…
A family.
A healthy family is one who cares for each other.

A healthy church family is marked by a deep and sincere care for one another.
1 Timothy 5:1–2 (ESV) - Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Galatians 6:1 (ESV) - Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
1 Timothy 5:3 (ESV) - 3Honor widows who are truly widows.

Romans 12:10 (ESV) - Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

James 1:27 (ESV) - Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Exodus 22:22–24 (ESV) - You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, 24and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.
1 Timothy 5:4-5 (ESV) - But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. 5She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day…

A widow with children and grandchildren is to be cared for by them (v4).
A true widow is one “left all alone” (v5).
1 Timothy 5:6-7 (ESV) - 6but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. 7Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach.
1 Timothy 5:8 (ESV) - But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Unwillingness to care for your family means your faith in Christ is called into question.
1 Timothy 5:9-10 (ESV) - Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband, 10and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of the saints, has cared for the afflicted, and has devoted herself to every good work.

A true widow is one “left all alone” (v5).

A true widow is not able to provide for herself (v9).

A true widow is proven faithful to her husband, her family and her church (vs9-10).
1 Timothy 5:11-13 (ESV) - But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry 12and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith. 13Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
1 Timothy 5:14-15 (ESV) - So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander. 15For some have already strayed after Satan.
1 Timothy 5:16 (ESV) - If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows.
The heart of a follower of Jesus is to care for those around them who are in need.
Discussion Questions

1. Express your understanding of 1 Timothy 5:1-2 by restating it in your own words.

2. Why do you think Paul gets so specific and takes such length in verses 3-16 to address the matter of caring for widows in the church?

3. What responsibility do we have towards Christians who are in need? Read Acts 11:27-30; James 2:14-17 and Matthew 24:31-46 to help answer. Does your answer change when thinking about people outside of the church? If so, in what way? Read Galatians 6:10 to help answer.

4. Should Christians see it as their responsibility to care for their aging parents? If so, to what extent are they to do so and what other support should they expect?

5. For those willing – share about a time (maybe current) when you were burdened to care for a family member or someone else. What heart challenges did you have (e.g. did you struggle with pride?)? What were the practical challenges of it? What was the joy you found in caring for them?
