Lord, you have been our dwelling place[a]

from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read Isaiah 61:1-3 and Luke 24:27.
a. How does Jesus teach us to interpret all of Scripture based upon what He says in Luke 24:27; i.e., all 66 books in the Bible? Big picture, who is the Bible about?
b. We see this pattern in Isaiah 61:1a.
i. The Spirit of the Lord God
ii. is upon me,
iii. Because the Lord…
1. Who is being identified in Isaiah 61:1a?
c. Read Luke 19:10. In Luke 19:1-9, we see that Jesus came to seek and save Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus responded by joyfully receiving Christ Jesus, repenting, and believing in Him.
i. Note: Kings, prophets, and apostles were all anointed for special service. Based upon Luke 19:10, what was this Servant anointed to do? What was His mission in the context of Luke?
d. Isaiah 61:1-3 explains the goal of Messiah’s anointing with seven purpose clauses: (included are counter references, which do not all need to be read. Pick two, then read).
i. The poor; see Matthew 5:3; To proclaim liberty; see Leviticus 25:10; The opening of the prison; this references the return from Babyloanian exile; Spiritual freedom; from the oppression of sin and Satan; The year of the Lord’s favor; see 2 Cor. 6:2; The day of vengeance of our God; see Revelation 6:15-17; Oaks of righteousness; see Psalm 1:3.
1. Seeing the example of Zacchaeus in the Luke passage above, how do we respond to Jesus in order to receive the blessings
described here?
2. If you are comfortable doing so, explain how Jesus has fulfilled His purpose in salvation using one of the seven purpose clauses above? How does this encourage you to love and stay near to Him?
e. Read Luke 4:18-21. Here, Jesus returns to his hometown Narareth and reads Isaiah 61 in a synagogue. He finishes reading the passage and then says this about Himself in Luke 4:21. Later in Luke, after His resurrection, He says something similar. Read Luke Luke 24:44-49. What are the implications of what Jesus proclaimed and accomplished for those who place faith in Him? How can you keep this front of mind?
