Romans 12:9-16 part 2

Romans 12:9-16 part 2

Anthonys message last Sunday taught us about the origin of the word sincere coming from the term Sine Cera meaning without wax. Let our love for others be sincere, not like clay pots with cracks filled with wax and covered up to look like the real thing. We are all flawed through sin but we can all be made right through the saving grace of Christ! This Sunday Anthony is bringing us the second message in our new sermon series on Romans 12:9-16. All welcome! Anthony says Sunday, we started our new series, looking at Romans 12, with the foundational command to Love, that our Love must be real and sincere. This may seem strange that straight after a command to Love we see a command to Hate. Really, yep, come along Sunday to see what we are commanded to Hate.

Romans 12:9-13

Mark 11:15-17

Hate what is evil; cling to what is good
Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good.
Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Detest what is evil; cling to what is good.
Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good.
Regard with horror what is evil; cling to what is right.

2 Timothy 2:22

Psalms 34:14

Psalms 45:7

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

Now what makes good good? And what makes evil evil? In other words, how does it come about that there is such a thing as objective good and evil? Well, this verse doesn’t say. But we don’t have to look far for the answer. Verse 2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” The reason there is such a thing as objective good is that there is such a thing as “the will of God.” Or most simply, and most profoundly, the reason there is such a thing as objective good outside ourselves is that there is God outside ourselves. And most concretely and specifically, God has made himself known objectively and historically in Jesus Christ in Scripture.
