GETTING TO KNOW YOU
If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINT
Through Jesus we can experience a miraculous birth, a restored relationship with God, and a glorious future.

DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read Isaiah 54:1-3 and Galatians 4:25-28.
a. Isaiah 54:1-10 gives an example of two women. The first woman found in verses 1-3 is captive and therefore “barren” Israel (from the Babylonian captivity). She has been adulterous and therefore her husband withdrew from her. Galatians 4:25-28 tells us that this is speaking of more than just Israel, however. The second woman is described in verses 4-10. Now the husband will return to this wife and the relationship will be restored.
i. What is the emotional response commanded by God to the barren one in verse 1?
ii. Given the context that many were captured by the Babylonians and therefore Israel was barren, how would this provide hope?
b. In verses 2-3, God is describing a family that will grow large, despite this barren woman. This barren woman is Israel, but also more than Israel (Isaiah 54:3 and Galatians 4:45-28 - key verse being 27). Enlarging the place of your tent is a metaphor for growing your family in Christ Jesus through the New Covenant.
i. What are some ways the Father accomplishes this through those who love Him?
ii. How can we be instruments in enlarging the family of God to His glory?
2. Read Isaiah 54:4-6
a. The reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more…even though Israel had turned to worship other gods (idols) leading up to their captivity, God remains faithful and good.
b. Starting in verse 4, what are things He promises to His people and how does He provide comfort? How does God comfort you in an increasingly secular America?
3. Read Isaiah 54:7-8.
a. Let’s reverse engineer these verses. Verse 8b says, “but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you.” Has there been a time where you felt deserted by God? What comfort do you feel knowing He loves us and has compassion on us, especially given that Jesus took the judgment for our sin upon Himself?
4. Read Isaiah 54:9-10.
a. Discuss what is meant by the comparison and contrast of mountains and hills with steadfast love, covenant of peace, and compassion.
