Some parts of King David's story are well known - his victory over Goliath, his connection to the Psalms and his anointing as King. But many Christians miss the full arch of David's story. David's story isn't just about victory. It's also a story of tragedy, regret and failed promise. But what David couldn't complete, Jesus ultimately finished.
In this series, we will look at key moments in David's life, both the good and the bad. As we look at David, though, we will also look to Jesus, seeing the ways in which Jesus fulfills the promise David fails.
The Text in Context
I. David and Jesus
II. David vs. Goliath
III. King David
IV. Jesus and David
V. King Jesus
1. Read Matthew 26:47-54 everyday this week.
2. Pray that Jesus' trust in God would become your own.
1. What do you think motivated David to confront Goliath when all the other Israelite soldiers wouldn't?
2. Goliath was a giant and a seasoned warrior, while David was just a young shepherd. How does the outcome of this battle challenge our understanding of strength and power?
3. In this passage, David chooses not to wear the armor offered to him by King Saul and chooses to use a sling and stone. Why do you think David made these choices and what does it reveal about his approach to facing challenges?
4. Read Matthew 26:47-54. How did Jesus face this challenge?
5. Read Matthew 4:1-11. How did Jesus face this challenge?
6. Do you see more similarities or differences between Jesus and David?
7. What are the differences? Looking at the differences, which way do you prefer, David's or Jesus'?
