Halloween Lights Outreach

Help us shine brightly for Jesus on Halloween.

When
Halloween is one night a year when our community literally comes knocking on our doors. Instead of turning off our lights and hiding from the neighbors, we want to shine the light of Jesus in our neighborhoods.

What
We do this by challenging people in our church to host a Halloween Lights night. If you live in a neighborhood with high trick-or-treat activity and want to host a site, sign up at:

Sign Up to Host or Help
Each site supplies hot dogs/buns/waters in addition to candy as a way to bless their neighbors and engage in conversation. We offer prayer whenever appropriate and make sure people know we are out there because we have been challenged to bless our neighbors.

It is incredible to hear what this means to people. We believe that good deed, lead to good will, which leads to openness to the Gospel. This is one way we are present in the community blessing others as the body of Christ and we would love for you to jump in!

On a scale of 1-10 How comfortable are you with reading the bible?

On a scale of 1-10 How confident are you with your knowledge of what the bible teaches?

God calls his people to live faithfully according to his word.
A Chiasm is a reversal of grammatical structures in successive phrases or clauses. The word comes from the Greek letter for "X" or Chi

The account of Jephthah contains two chiasms we will look at today.

Chiastic Structure in Judges 10:6-16

A (10:6-9) they abandoned the LORD and would not serve him.
B (10:10) confession of sin and idolatry
C (10:11-14) The words of the LORD
'B (10:15) confession of sin and idolatry
'A (10:16) they cast out foreign gods and serve the lord.

The center of this chiasm is the word of the LORD to Israel.

The word of the lord is the center point and lead Israel to repentance.

God Calls his people to life faithfully according to his word.

Israel has recognized their need for a savior and that it is only God who can save them. They turn to God, away from their idol worship and begin to serve him. And he can bear their misery no longer.
Chiastic Structure in Judges 11-12:7

A (11:1) The Gileadite Jephthah
B (11:2-3) Jephthah Flees from his brothers
C (11:4-11) Elders made/fulfilled a vow
D (11:12-29) Jephthah & Ammonite King Talk
C' (11:30-40) Jephthah made/fulfilled a vow
B' 12:1-6 Manasseh & Ephraim (brothers) reject Gileadites
A' 12:7 The Death of Jephthah the Gileadite

In the center of the chiasm we have a discourse between Jephthah and the Ammonite King. After this the text says: "Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jephthah" ...and Jephthah goes to war.
The pivotal moment is when Jephthah remembers his God. So not only has Israel turned to him, but they are now proclaiming him to the nations...serving him as they were called to do.

And now God delivers them.

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO LIVE FAITHFULLY ACCORDING TO HIS WORD.

...But that is not the end of the story...something is still off for Israel.
Jephthah vows to offer a sacrifice that is unacceptable.

No one in Israel stops him, they may have turned to him, but they are not aware of or keeping God's commands.

Isreal's need for God to save them, drove them to turn to him and serve him--but they are not keeping his commands...

Our need for a savior, drives us towards God.
It is our love and gratitude for what he has done for us, that causes us to keep his commands.
When we live according to God's word, we live in the world but do not include the practices of this world in our worship of him.

The only way to know we are living according to his commands, is to know the truth of God's word.

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO LIVE FAITHFULLY ACCORDING TO HIS WORD.
SO...HOW COMFORTABLE ARE YOU WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF SCRIPTURE?
