GETTING TO KNOW YOU
What has been your favorite road trip or vacation?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINT
Jesus is the Lamb of God who came to save wayward sheep and give us everlasting life.

DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read Isaiah 53:4-6
a. The servant took upon Himself the bitter consequences of our sin. People mistakenly considered him to be smitten by God and punished for his own sins Isaiah 53:4b. As a first century Jewish person, how do you think you would have viewed this servant’s suffering?
b. In verses 5-6 we see that this servant was pierced, crushed, chastised, and thus had wounds. We also see that like sheep, we have all gone astray. Why was it necessary for his wounds to heal us? How can this servant’s wounds heal us?
2. Read Isaiah 53:7-9
a. Read John 18:4 and Isaiah 53:7-8. Unlike a sheep that is to be slaughtered unknowingly, Jesus, the Lamb of God, knowingly was taken to be slaughtered. How can the knowledge of this change our lives? How does this keep us humble?
b. Read Isaiah 53:9 and Matthew 27:57-61. Here, Isaiah completes the picture of the Servant as our Substitute. He was acceptable to the offended God verse 6, without stain of our sin, verse 9, identified with us in our need, verses 4-5, and voluntarily standing in our place, verses 7-8. How does knowledge lead to gratitude?
3. Read Isaiah 53:10-12.
a. In verse 10b, we see he shall see his offspring. Who are the offspring of God? What does it mean that he shall prolong his days, despite his death, in light of 1 Corinthians 15:4? What is the significance of this?
b. In verse 12, it says divide a portion…the spoil, etc. The ESV study bible notes the imagery is that of a conqueror sharing his victory with his allies. How can we be allies of Jesus? How can that play out in our lives? Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, he will make an intercession on our behalf. But he must know us (Matthew 7:21-23). Reflect on this privately. Does Jesus know you?

TAKING IT HOME
Looking back at this week’s study, what is important for you to remember and why?

PRAISE & PRAYER REQUESTS

“offering for guilt” (Isaiah 53:10) is a technical term from the Book of Leviticus.
The “Guilt Offering” was made to satisfy a debt.
“The basic principle of the whole Bible is: Substitution. For the essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man.”
(John Stott)
The “arm of the Lord” is God himself, acting to bring salvation.
