Sermon Title: Sharing Two Ways
Text: 1 Thess. 2:1-12
Point 1. We are to have boldness to declare the gospel...even in conflict.
For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. 1 Thess. 2:2
· (Paul) So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Acts 9:28
· So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. Acts 14:3
· To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Eph. 6:18-20
· “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts. 1:8
Point 2: We have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.
But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. 1 Thess. 2:4a
· That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:19
· And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 2 Tim. 2:2
Point 3: We need to check out motivation at the door before we declare the gospel.
For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive….So we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. or we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. 1 Thess. 2:3-6
Point 4: Sharing the gospel means sharing ourselves.
But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. 1 Thess. 2:8-10
· Correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. 2 Tim. 2:25
· But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. 1 Pet. 3:15
Point 5: Following Jesus turns us into servants.
· I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal 2:20
· Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus. Phil 2:3-5
· Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Phil. 2:6-8
Application: We need to share the gospel because it’s part of walking in a manner worthy of God.
For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. 1 Thess. 2:11-12
