Big Idea: God is always at work, even in the details of our lives, seeking to draw us closer to Him and to empower us for service.
I. God is at Work (vv. 1-27)
A. Here we are introduced to Saul, Israel’s first king. The main point is that Saul came from an important family and was an impressive man whose physical qualities would surely inspire confidence in the people. We also see that Saul was the king the people asked for—someone who reflected them and could play the part. In the end, though, Saul did not have the heart for the job and failed to fully surrender to God as Lord of his life.
B. In this narrative we are reminded that God is always at work. The sequence of events here is not accidental—God’s hand is in all of it, and it reminds us:
1. God is at work in history (cf. Ps. 121:1-4; Jn. 5:17-18).
2. God is at work in our lives (cf. Rom. 8:26-30).
C. It can be easy to look at the world around us and wonder where God is in all of this, but He is at work even in our darkest moments (cf. Rom. 13:1-2).
II. God is in the Details (vv. 1-27)
A. Saul was sent by his father, Kish, to find their lost donkeys (owning much livestock was a sign of wealth in that time). Saul serendipitously makes his way to Samuel who is waiting for him to arrive as God said he would (vv. 15-17). In this we see God using everyday details to accomplish His purposes and plans!
B. No detail is too small for God, and it is important for us to be mindful of what the Holy Spirit is doing through:
1. Time spent in the Word (cf. Ps. 119:105).
2. Time spent in prayer (cf. Mk. 1:35-39).
3. Time spent in fellowship.
C. When we learn to recognize God’s working in the details of our lives, then we begin to better see the “divine appointments” God uses to shape our lives, grow our faith, and encourage others.
