------------
“to afflict the soul” or “to deny oneself.”
Are we commanded to fast? No, Jesus never taught it directly - He taught it indirectly. Jesus simply assumes that believers will.

Distortions of Fasting:
------------
- Turing fasting into a routine religious duty.
- Fasting to be seen by others.

Corrections to Fasting:
------------
- When you fast, act natural.
- Jesus isn’t ruling out group fasting - he’s ruling out wrong motives for fasting.
- Being seen fasting and fasting to be seen are not the same.

How are Citizens of God’s Kingdom to view, pursues and use material possessions?
The acquisition of material wealth became the greatest goal in life for the Pharisees. They wrongly believed it was a sure sign their righteousness satisfied God.

Treasure on Earth:
-------------
- Not just money - treasure is whatever you value and protect.
- Come in all shapes and sizes and is anything that centers on this world alone.

“Rust” means “to eat away.” The reference is probably to the loss of crops and grain due to worms, rats, and other vermin.
“Break in” means “to dig through.” Houses in the ancient world were not made of brick - they were made of baked clay where thieves could dig their way in.
Jesus does not eliminate desire. He merely redirects it. He does not condemn ambition. He elevates it.

Four Reasons - Jesus has no need to give us reasons. But He stoops to our weakness, mighty as He is, and He comes to our aid and supplies us with reasons for carrying out His commandment.
Durability (v19-20) - Corruptible vs Incorruptible Treasure
Desire (v21) – Our heart is our inner intellectual and volitional core, the source of our deeds. What you love determines the course of your life.
Direction - Just as our eyes affect our whole body, so our ambition (where we fix our eyes) affects our whole life.

Warning about possessions becoming a focus of concern, competes for the disciples’ loyalty. Men can work for two employers, but no slave can be the property of two masters.
Closing Thought: A Pharisee wants a rule, Jesus wants us to wrestle.
