Growing in Christ: The Essentials of Discipleship II

"The Marks of a True Disciple" underscores the profound importance of authenticity and devotion in one's journey of faith. It reminds us that being a disciple isn't merely about outward displays of piety or adherence to religious rituals, but about embodying the teachings and values at the core of one's belief system. True discipleship is a lifelong commitment to love, compassion, humility, and selflessness, serving as a beacon of light in a world often plagued by division and discord. By striving to bear the marks of a true disciple, individuals can not only deepen their spiritual connection but also contribute to the betterment of humanity as a whole.

The Marks of a True Disciple

John 13:35

The marks of a disciple are qualities and characteristics that identify someone as a genuine follower of Jesus Christ.
1st Mark - Love for One Another: Jesus emphasized the importance of love as a distinguishing mark of His disciples.

Here, Jesus emphasizes a hallmark of discipleship: Love.

The love we have for one another demonstrates our allegiance to Christ.

Our love reflects His love, revealing our true identity as His disciples.

As we grow in Christ, our love for one another becomes a testimony to the world of our connection with Him.
Following Jesus' Commandments: Jesus summarized the commandments in Matthew 22:37-39 (ESV) when He said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Obedience to these commandments involves actively and intentionally loving others with genuine care and compassion, just as you would want for yourself.

Matthew 22:37-39

Practicing Forgiveness: Obedience in love includes forgiving those who have wronged you, just as God forgives us when we repent. This means letting go of grudges and harboring no ill will towards others.
Showing Kindness and Mercy: Obedience to love involves showing kindness, mercy, and empathy towards others, especially to those who are in need or going through difficult times. This includes acts of charity and helping those less fortunate.
Respecting Differences: Loving one another obediently means respecting the differences among individuals, including their beliefs, backgrounds, and opinions, without judgment or prejudice. It means treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of their differences.
Putting Others First: Obedient love is selfless and sacrificial. It involves putting the needs and well-being of others before your own, as exemplified by Jesus' life and teachings.
Building Unity: Obedient love seeks to build unity and peace among people. It means working towards reconciliation and harmony in relationships, even in the face of conflicts or differences.
Being Patient and Kind: Obedient love, as described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV), is patient and kind, not envious or boastful. It does not insist on its own way and is not easily angered. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

2nd Mark - Obedience to God's Word: Disciples are committed to following and obeying God's Word.

John 14:23

Listening and Learning: Obedience starts with a willingness to listen to God's Word and to learn from it. This includes studying the Bible, attending religious teachings, and seeking to understand its message.
Believing: Obedience is rooted in faith. It means believing in the truth and authority of God's Word and accepting it as a guide for one's beliefs and actions.
Following Commandments: Obedience involves living in accordance with the moral and ethical commandments found in the Bible. This includes the Ten Commandments and other specific instructions given in both the Old and New Testaments.
Repentance and Forgiveness: When one falls short of God's standards, obedience also involves seeking forgiveness through repentance. This means acknowledging one's mistakes, turning away from sinful behavior, and seeking God's grace and forgiveness.
Loving God and Others: Obedience is not just about following rules but also about expressing love for God and love for others. Jesus emphasized the importance of loving God and loving one's neighbor as central aspects of obedience (Matthew 22:37-39).

Matthew 22:37-39

Application in Daily Life: Obedience extends to how one conducts themselves in everyday life. It means making choices and decisions that align with God's Word in areas such as relationships, work, finances, and personal conduct.
Seeking God's Will: Obedience also involves seeking God's guidance and will through prayer and discernment. It means being open to God's leading and direction in life.
3rd Mark - Fruitfulness: Disciples bear fruit in their lives, which includes good works, character growth, and a positive impact on others.

John 15:8

Living a Righteous Life: Obedience to Christ includes striving for righteousness and holiness in your thoughts, actions, and behaviors. This involves avoiding sin and making choices that align with God's moral standards.
Sharing the Gospel: Being obedient in Christ means actively participating in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), spreading the message of salvation and making disciples. This evangelistic effort can lead to the fruit of new believers and spiritual growth in others.

Matthew 28:18-20

Serving Others: Obedience to Christ also involves serving others in love and humility. This can include acts of kindness, charity, and helping those in need, reflecting the selflessness of Jesus.
Praying for Guidance: Seeking God's guidance through prayer and listening to the Holy Spirit's leading can lead to fruitfulness in making wise decisions, choosing the right path, and experiencing spiritual growth.
Enduring Trials and Persevering: Obedience often requires enduring trials and difficulties with faith and perseverance, which can lead to spiritual maturity and growth (James 1:2-4).

James 1:2-4

Building Christian Community: Being obedient to Christ means actively participating in a local church community, where you can grow in faith, support and encourage others, and bear fruit together through collective worship and service.

Online Giving

<b>Tithe &amp; Offering</b><i>2 Corinthians 9:7 KJVEvery man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for&nbsp;God loveth a cheerful giver.</i> God's people have always been characterized by giving, but the way they've given has changed over time.&nbsp; Giving is an important aspect of the Christian life. After all, Luke records that Jesus himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (<i>Acts 20:35</i>).&nbsp; At Northside, we want to encourage all members to pray about giving and give as God leads them.&nbsp;
